Unfortunately, cancer patients often experience a sense of coldness in their extremities such as hands and feet or other parts of the body where numbing pain usually occurs. Being cold for prolonged periods cannot not be explained by Western Medicine. Your GP doctor may not be able to provide an explanation and/or treatment for this ‘Cold syndrome/disorder’, but with Eastern Medicine, there is a clear underlying problem behind this coldness: it’s due to poor blood circulation. Connecting the dots, depressed people (whether with cancer or not) have poor circulation which in turns negatively affects temperature distribution, therefore causing this coldness perception. Coldness is also closely associated with other adverse events such as muscle weakness, vascular diseases, over-consumption of cold foods (e.g., greens and yogurts), and so on. And so, to counteract this, a variety of herbs such as GuiZhi (cinnamon bark), Wu Zhu Yu, and Pao FuZi can be prescribed to warmup the body.
